Purpose
The Shelburne County Arts Council is proud to offer an art scholarship for any graduating student or graduate residing within Shelburne County. This scholarship is intended to reward arts students for past accomplishments and to encourage future pursuits in the arts.
A brief history
The Shelburne County Arts Council was established in 2001. Their mandate is to support and promote the development of art, artists, and art education in Shelburne County. They have a special focus on youth and education as they create opportunities for citizens to engage in a wide range of artistic endeavors. This scholarship was established in memory of Peter Oliver, who was the director of the Basement Theatre in Shelburne. He was a mentor and friend to many students. He and his wife Joan were mentors and friends to many students. Peter has been described by his students as being dynamic, fun, challenging, curious, brave yet devoted, and a perpetually interesting man who gave something to the people of Shelburne that should be celebrated. Peter and Joan will be remembered for their own great accomplishments in the arts and for the accomplishments they allowed other people to experience. Eligibility
You must meet all of the following in order to be eligible for this scholarship:
- You must be a current or former resident of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia.
- You must show proven artistic ability in at least one of these arts areas: dance, literature, music, theatre, traditional arts, and visual arts.
- You will need to be accepted as a full-time undergraduate at a fully-accredited college or university with a major in one of the areas listed above.
- Turn in a completed application to the SCAC by May 31st of the year of intended study.
Application review
The following items must be included with the application:
- Completed application form
- A sample of art projects completed during high school (choose one option or a combination of the following):
- Portfolio of five samples of visual artworks
- DVD or videotape containing five minutes of performance (dance, video art, visual arts, drama)
- CD or audiotape containing five minutes of performance (musicians, composers)
- Printed copies of five written works (prose, poetry)
- A one-page resume listing arts activities, classes, and training received during high school
- One-page typed essay (or 150-200 word essay) describing “Why you feel you are deserving of this scholarship”
- Two letters of recommendation
- A copy of your High School transcript
Scholarship amount
One scholarship in the amount of $300 will be awarded annually. It will be at the discretion of the committee whether unused scholarship money will be awarded from a previous year.
Award of scholarship
The scholarship will be awarded at the graduation ceremony of the local school of the recipient.
The deadline for applications is May 31.
