Caroyln's Fund

In support of nature, literacy and heritage

Established:

Carolyn's FundAn outstanding zest for life marked these three special individuals, my parents, Edythe and Michael, and my husband, Peter. Bright, capable people of boundless good humour, robust attitudes, strong personal integrity, and a great love of and appreciation for life around them, I was blessed indeed to have had such people in my life.

All of them had a strong social spirit, the sense that there is always something you can and should do to contribute to those around you. I was delighted when I discovered the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. It presents a way I, as an ordinary individual, can over time build up a fund to assist various community initiatives in the long term. In so doing, I am keeping faith with these much loved relatives and, in naming areas I would like my fund to support, it struck me how clearly they reflect the values of these three people – nature, literacy, and heritage.

Colin Chipman Memorial Fund

A legacy for the Bridgetown area to forever remember a special young man

Established: 2010

Colin Chipman Memorial FundA kind, enthusiastic, optimistic, team player and a caring individual is how Colin Chipman is described. At just 13, Colin had made a lasting impression on his classmates, school and community before he lost his life in an ATV accident in 2001. He had a true passion for life and found great enjoyment in whatever he was doing. Colin was a natural athlete and loved all sports, but his greatest passion was hockey. Colin touched many people with his kind heart and big smile. The Colin Chipman Memorial Fund was established by Colin’s parents, Margie and Robert, so that his legacy will forever live on in the Bridgetown area. Each year, the Fund will support charitable activities within the Bridgetown area that best reflect Colin’s character. The Colin Chipman Memorial Fund is a proud part of the Bridgetown Area Community Fund, an endowment fund created by local residents in 2008 to enhance the well-being of the Bridgetown Area by supporting the social needs and broad interests of the community including culture, education, arts, heritage, health, sport, recreation, and other cornerstones of this vibrant community.

JSF Fund

Supporting Local Projects and Charities

Established: December 2008

The JSF Fund was established by Dartmouth native John MacLeod in honour of his grandfather, John Simon Fraser MacLeod – who came to Halifax with his wife, Willina Murray MacKay a few years prior to the Halifax Explosion.

The MacLeod home quickly became a popular stopping place for those travelling to the city from Pictou and Earltown areas. This warm maritime generosity was passed down through the MacLeod family. As a child, John learned first hand the importance of giving back to his community through his parents, Dr. Ian and Marjorie MacLeod, who gave regularly to Symphony Nova Scotia and other local charities.

When John’s sister Sandra passed away, scholarship funds were established in her honour at Armbrae Academy and the University of King’s College and they continue to benefit local students each year. John regularly supports over a half dozen charities which focus on education, music, health and the relief of hunger and poverty. He is especially interested in supporting projects which use new approaches to addressing old problems.

I created the JSF Fund because I wanted to create something that would make possible things that might not ordinarily happen if I didn’t do something” ~ John MacLeod, Donor.

JStrong Foundation

Supporting underprivileged youth in the Yarmouth area who wish to be involved in sports.

Established: 2016

The JStrong Foundation is named in memory of Jadon Robinson, a Yarmouth teen who loved all sports, especially football. The foundation will help youth access sport, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to play.

Jadon tragically lost his life in a car accident in 2015. Sports were a big part of the amazing person Jadon was and the legacy he has left behind. Jadon felt every child should have the same ability to experience the tremendous, sometimes life-changing influence that recreational sports can bring, regardless of his or her family’s finances.

The purpose of this fund is to ensure that youth can have the same positive experiences by providing financial assistance to underprivileged youth who wish to be involved in sports/recreational play.

Youth residing in the Yarmouth area of Nova Scotia with demonstrated financial need will eligible for funding from the JSTRONG Foundation when funding becomes available.

T.S. Rosewater Fund

Established: 2017

T.S. Rosewater Fund

Kurt Vonnegut

The T. S. Rosewater Fund is named in honour of author Kurt Vonnegut, who recognized the foolishness of the human species and who wrote so eloquently and satirically about the harm we do to one another, to our planet, and to all its inhabitants. This fund has been established to try to help mitigate some of that damage and support initiatives that benefit the natural environment.

Purpose:

The T.S. Rosewater Fund was established for the purpose of assisting those individuals and organizations that are attempting to minimize or mitigate the effects of humans and their actions on the planet and its non-human inhabitants. In making disbursements, the committee shall grant to initiatives focused on land conservation, wildlife habitat protection, pollution mitigation, sustainable agriculture, and projects that address the causes and effects of climate change, including the support of registered charities that are involved in advocacy related to the environment and climate change.
